Why a light load?

If you were going to shoot someone in the mouth with a shotgun at 2:30 in the morning in a quiet suburban area, wouldn't you want to you know... keep it down a little? 

Kurt Cobain once said in an interview that he would blow away anyone who threatened his family, think about it. Now think about his paranoid state at the time, he wouldn't remove pellets from a bullet would he? I mean, given his statement? I believe the bullets he originally bought were deliberately put into his bag before Ottinger retained them. He was told to bring them back to the house, but he didn't, even tho his own dispatcher told him to, why call the dispatcher if you weren't planning to to begin with? 

Dylan, who knows plently about guns had plenty of time to remove pellets.

Yeah, they were supposed to explode his head, hence Mark putting on a red dress in case he gets splattered with blood. But that didn't happen.
